How to Email a Kindle E-book to Your iPad

9/17/2015

Reading on an iPad
So you signed up for an author's email list and received a free copy of one of his or her Kindle e-books (.mobi file) via email, but now you aren't sure what to do with it. Or maybe you visited Smashwords, or an author's website, and saw free .mobi files there, but weren't sure how to view them in your Kindle Reading App on your iPad.

Let's walk through the three-step process. I'm going to use Mark Coker's free e-book, "The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success," that is currently available on the Smashwords website, as an example. I heard about the book on The Creative Penn podcast recently, which you should definitely check out if you are, or want to be, an indie author.

STEP 1: Download the .mobi file to your computer.
  • Save it to a folder you will be able to find.

STEP 2: Email the .mobi file (as an attachment) to your Send-to-Kindle email address.
  • If you aren't sure what your Send-to-Kindle email address is, Amazon has set up a page to help you find it.
  • You can also find it in the Kindle Reading App on your iPad, by clicking on Settings. It'll be in the first box that pops up.

STEP 3: Open the Kindle Reading App on your iPad.
  • Click on the Menu and navigate to "Docs" (not books) to find your e-book.
